What the work actually is

Not a course. Not training. Not advice wearing a coaching label. A sustained conversation with someone who will not hand you the answer.

How it goes

Four things keep happening. Not in this order, and not once.

Making it safe enough to be honest. Most senior leaders have not said the real thing out loud in years — not to a peer, not at home, sometimes not to themselves. That comes first and it cannot be hurried.

Working with what is happening now. Not the account of last Tuesday. What you are doing in this room, in this sentence — the hesitation, the hedge, the place your voice changes. That is where the pattern is actually available to work with.

Widening to the system. You are not the only variable. Your team, your mandate, the culture you sit inside, the incentives nobody names out loud. Some of what feels personal is structural, and it helps to know which is which.

Building the muscle. One experiment, repeated, until it holds under pressure and not only in calm. This is the slow part, and it is the part that lasts.

These recur for as long as the work runs. There is no point at which you have completed them.

Attention

What I listen for

How your past shaped the way you read the present.

Whether what you say you want would cost you something you have not counted.

The moment your words and everything else stop agreeing.

Where it shows up

Five rooms

It almost always surfaces as communication. That is not the problem itself — it is where the problem becomes visible to everyone but you.

Influencing without authoritywhen the org chart is not on your side
Strategic mindsetwhen you are too close to the work to see its shape
Ambiguity and uncertaintywhen there is no version of this you can control
Executive presencewhen you are in the room and not quite in it
Driving transformationwhen you have to carry people you cannot compel

What I will not do

I can usually see it by the second session. That is not the work. The work is not telling you.

An insight handed to you is something you agree with on Tuesday and forget by Thursday. The same insight arrived at yourself changes what you do on Monday.

The contract

What this asks of you

That you keep showing up on the weeks you would rather not. Most people find that harder than the work itself, and it is the only reliable predictor I have found of whether this works.

What this is not

Not life coaching. Not training. Not mentoring. Not consulting in a coaching costume. No productivity systems, no office politics, no promotion tactics.

And if what you are carrying belongs with a clinical professional rather than a coach, I will say so, and help you find the right person.
